Dodgers Roster: Andre Jackson Recalled, Dylan Covey Designated For Assignment

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Andre Jackson from Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated Dylan Covey for assignment on Thursday.

It was one of two roster moves the Dodgers made prior to their series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals as the team additionally put Dustin May on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain and recalled Justin Bruihl. The lefty reliever had been optioned Wednesday as the corresponding move to Covey’s contract being selected.

Jackson is back up with the Dodgers for a third time this season. He’s recorded one save and pitched to a 7.94 ERA and 1.68 WHIP thus far. However, Jackson’s ERA is inflated from a rough appearance in which he tipped pitches and allowed five runs on six hits, including four home runs, over two innings.

Jackson otherwise has allowed three earned runs or fewer in his four other appearances. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA across six games for Oklahoma City. Despite being a starter for most of his career, Jackson continued pitching out of the bullpen while with OKC this season.

Bruihl and Jackson join a Dodgers bullpen that logged 21 innings over the duration of the series against the Minnesota Twins. That usage required the Dodgers to option Bruihl after he pitched three consecutive days.

Meanwhile, Covey now is on waivers one day after getting to pitch for his hometown team. Covey was pressed into duty after May came out of his start due to injury, and he provided the Dodgers with four-plus innings.

Covey allowed two runs and had three strikeouts in his first MLB game since 2020. The Dodgers signed the 31-year-old to a Minor League contract in January.

Andre Jackson put home runs into perspective

The morning after his rough appearance against the Chicago Cubs, Jackson joined the Dodgers for a Jackie Robinson Day community event, and he used the down moment to impress on children the importance of maintaining perspective.

“When I think about Jackie Robinson, I think about two words. I think about belief and gratitude,” Jackson said. “If you watch the game, you saw me give up four home runs. Obviously, I was pretty upset about it. When I think about Jackie Robinson, it’s actually perfect timing.

“I had a bad game. Today, I get to believe in something bigger than myself. I don’t have time to sit here and sulk about my game. I’ve got to move on. So when I move onto today, I think about how do I get back to being confident? I think about believing in your success and your past. Believing in yourself.”
