Dodgers Rain Delay: Wednesday’s Game Against Guardians Suspended; Doubleheader Added To Schedule

Wednesday’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Guardians was postponed due to a rain delay. The announcement came 1 hour and 35 minutes after play was suspended in the top of the third inning with the Dodgers leading 3-1.

Now the Dodgers and Guardians will be back at Progressive Field on Wednesday to resume play at 9:10 a.m. PT. Upon completion, the previously scheduled series finale will begin roughly 30 minutes after completion of the first game.

First pitch for Wednesday’s originally scheduled game had been set for 10:10 a.m. PT.

For all intents and purposes, it’s a second unexpected doubleheader the Dodgers are playing in the past five days. Tropical Storm Hilary required the Dodgers to adjust the end of their schedule at the end of a homestand to play a split-doubleheader on August 19.

As for the middle game of their series with the Guardians, Clayton Kershaw pitched just two innings in his shortest start of the season. It occurred at a particularly inopportune time as Kershaw is looking to stretch out after pitching five innings in both of his first two outings off the 15-day injured list.

Kershaw allowed a solo home run and finished with four strikeouts before play was suspended. He struck out three of four batters faced in the second inning.

The Dodgers took their lead behind Mookie Betts extending his hitting streak to 11 games with a leadoff single that helped set the table. Freddie Freeman’s base hit put runners at the corners and Will Smith followed with a sacrifice fly.

Max Muncy later doubled and Kiké Hernández hit a two-out, two-run double.

Dodgers pitching plans

While the Dodgers figure to rely on a bullpen game for the resumption of Tuesday’s contest, Ryan Pepiot had already been named a starter for the series finale.

Pepiot made his 2023 debut in the first game of the doubleheader against the Miami Marlins, and was on the Dodgers’ taxi squad for the road trip.
