The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned Yadier Alvarez, Josh Sborz and Donnie Hart and reassigned Omar Estevez and Gavin Lux to Minor League camp on Sunday. They are now down 50 players in camp, including 21 infielders/outfielders, 23 pitchers and six catchers.
As was the plan all along, Alvarez did not appear in a Cactus League game this spring. He was mainly up with the Major League club to work on his mechanics.
Hart, who the Dodgers recently claimed on waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, also did not make an appearance for the club during his short time in big league camp.
Sborz struggled a bit in his five Cactus League appearances this spring, giving up four hits and five runs (two earned) in 3.1 innings, good for a 5.40 ERA. He struck out three and walked five.
Estevez had to have made an impression on the Major League coaching staff and front office this spring. The shortstop hit .316/.350/.737 with two home runs, two doubles and four RBI in 10 games.
Lux, who is one of the Dodgers’ top prospects, did not fare as well as Estevez. He batted .150/.190/.300 with a double, a triple and two RBI in 10 games.
As Opening Day inches closer, the Dodgers will continue to pare down the number of players in camp so the focus can shift towards getting those who will be on the big league roster ready for the start of the season.
With that, the Minor League players can go over to that side and get the work in that they need to be ready for their respective seasons as well.
