The Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers have presented Major League Baseball with many iconic and well-known figures. Each from their own era, they surpassed expectations placed on them to achieve feats not many others have accomplished.

Among those etched in Dodger lore is former manager Tommy Lasorda. Now a special advisor to the chairman, Lasorda is a regular at Dodger Stadium with the same fiery passion he had when he guided the club to three World Series titles.

On Tuesday, Lasorda was honored by Loyola Marymount University in an event held inside the university’s Life Sciences Building Auditorium.

LMU presented the former Dodgers skipper with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. He was handed the honor by president of the university Dr. Timothy Law Synder, via LMU’s Twitter account:

In a statement from President Snyder, Lasorda was praised for his contributions to the community and and inspiration:

“Tommy Lasorda is a legendary member of the sports world and has been an outstanding contributor to Los Angeles community for decades,” said Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D., president of LMU. “He has been an inspiration to generations of young people in what it means to be a true leader by exhibiting the highest level of honesty, pride and commitment to his team and its individuals and his community.”

Along with his contributions and ties to the Dodgers organization, Lasorda is a spokesperson for the American Heart Association and makes scheduled visits to the Tommy Lasorda Heart Institute at the Centinela Hospital Medical Center.

Lasorda’s reputation and care for the community is not only displayed in the countless number of visits he makes on behalf of the Dodgers, but also in the character and personality he has displayed throughout the years.
