Tommy Edman has long been a player the Los Angeles Dodgers coveted, and after finally acquiring him prior to the 2024 MLB trade deadline, the results are paying off.

The Dodgers had to be patient for their return as Edman joined the club while on the 60-day injured list amid an ongoing recovery from a sprained ankle and offseason wrist surgery.

But since he was activated on Aug. 19, Edman has become a key contributor. He’s played plus-defense at both center field and shortstop, and his bat has begun to heat up of late.

Edman blasted two home runs on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs, and he followed that up with two more in the series finale.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever done that before in my life,” Edman said.

As a switch-hitter, Edman homered from each side of the plate on Wednesday, making it the first time he’s done that in a single game.

In his first month back coming off the injured list, Edman batted just .275/.286/.350 in August. In September, he’s increased that to .325/.357/.650.

“I feel like I’ve kind of gotten locked into a good routine in the cage, working on mechanics and having consistent movements in my swing and the results are paying off,” Edman noted.

The utilityman is now hitting .300/.321/.500 with four home runs, 12 runs scored, 13 RBI and five stolen bases across 21 games.

Edman is under contract for one more season after 2024, and it would not be surprising to see the Dodgers make an effort to extend him at some point.

Next season he should continue to fill in as a starter at shortstop or center field, depending on the bigger need at the time.

Dodgers ‘wedged’ their way into Tommy Edman trade

Edman was almost traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Chicago White Sox, but the Dodgers saw it as an opportunity to get the player they’ve long wanted.

Instead, the three-team trade provided the Dodgers with Michael Kopech in the bullpen, and Edman to add to their position player group.

The primary player the Dodgers sent back to the White Sox was Miguel Vargas, who lost playing time withe the club and did not have a position moving forward.
