The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Peter O’Brien off waivers from the Texas Rangers. He’ll be assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Los Angeles designated Jason Wheeler for assignment to create room on their 40-man roster for the addition of O’Brien.
He was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Saturday, when the club added Ernesto Frieri to the active roster. O’Brien has appeared in a combined 48 Triple-A games this season for Round Rock (Rangers affiliate), Louisville (Cincinnati Reds) and Omaha (Kansas City Royals).
He’s played catcher, first base, third base, left field and right field over six Minor League seasons.
The 26-year-old went 13-for-186 with five doubles, one triple and six home runs in those contests. O’Brien has appeared in 36 Major League games with the Arizona Diamondbacks over parts of the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
He has 13 hits in 74 MLB at-bats, with six home runs and 12 RBI. Coincidentally, O’Brien made his MLB debut against the Dodgers at Chase Field. He was selected by the New York Yankees in second round of the 2012 Draft.
Wheeler was acquired June 2 in a trade with the Minnesota Twins in exchange for cash considerations. Wheeler went 0-1 and allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits, including one home run, in 8.2 innings.
