Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Jose Miguel Fernandez of the Double-A Tulsa Drillers was named the Texas League Player of the Week for games played June 12-18, 2017.
During that span Fernandez went 14-for-26, batting .538/.556/.846 with two doubles, two home runs, eight RBIs and three runs scored.
The Dodgers signed the 29-year-old to a Minor League contract in February. The switch-hitting infielder spent eight seasons playing professionally in Cuba.
Fernandez is batting .336/.386/.493 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs through 61 games with the Drillers. He hit .319/.403/.423 with 37 home runs and 318 RBIs during his time in Cuba.
Fernandez provides the Dodgers organizational infield depth. He’s a natural second baseman, though can also play first base and third base. Fernandez 46 games at second base for the Drillers, and three at third.
In addition to Fernandez, two other Drillers players have earned Texas League Player of the Week honors this season, as outfielder Edwin Rios was recognized on the week of April 24-30 and catcher Kyle Farmer was recognized from May 8-14.
Nine Drillers players were also recently named to the Texas League All-Star team, as Rios and Michael Ahmed were named starters, while position players Matt Beaty, Kyle Garlick, Paul Hoenecke and Tim Locastro; and pitchers Scott Barlow, Walker Buehler and Corey Copping were also named to the North Division team.
