The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated Grant Dayton from the disabled list on Saturday, and optioned Josh Fields to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Dayton’s return gives the Dodgers a second left-handed reliever in their seven-man bullpen.
Dayton was put on the 10-day DL with a left intercostal strain. Friday was the first day he was eligible to be activated, but the Dodgers elected to provide Dayton with an additional day of rest.
The 29-year-old has allowed just two hits and recorded four strikeouts in 6.1 shutout innings over seven relief appearances. Dayton, who made his MLB debut last season, pitched to a 2.05 ERA in 25 games with the Dodgers in 2016.
Fields began this season with Oklahoma City and joined the Dodgers when Rich Hill was placed on the disabled list for the first time. Fields returned to OKC once Pedro Baez was activated, but returned once Dayton went down.
Prior to allowing one run in 0.2 innings of Friday’s victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, Fields had put together 6.1 scoreless appearances. Overall with the Dodgers, he’s thrown seven innings, allowed one run on six hits, and struck out 12 compared to just one walk.
“Josh Fields did a great job for us,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Obviously, we have (team) control and he’s a player with options, that’s part of the game. Josh did tremendous things for us, and he’ll be back.”
