Dodgers News: Freddie Freeman’s Health Not Reason For June Struggles

The month of June was not kind to Freddie Freeman as he hit just .200/.283/.274 in his 106 plate appearances with 24 strikeouts and just 10 walks.

Freeman’s stats have been even worse in his last 15 games, hitting .175/.266/.228.

The ongoing struggles were in stark contrast from the start of the 2025 season and through May as he once again had emerged as a steady presence in the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup. Freeman had been enjoying the best start to a season of his career, batting .374/.440/.638 by the end of May.

One reason his performance at the beginning of the season was so impressive was that Freeman was not playing at 100%. Freeman has been nursing his right ankle as he recovers from offseason surgery that was required because of the severe sprain he suffered late last year.

He then aggravated the ankle after slipping in the shower back in April, which caused the Dodgers to place Freeman on the 10-day injured list retroactive to March 31.

He missed six games as a result and was activated on April 11.

Freeman recently suffered a minor right quad injury on June 10 against the San Diego Padres. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that Freeman suffered his quad injury while covering first base.

However, Freeman said that the injury is behind him.

“No aches, no pains. Only ache and pain is the swing,” Freeman answered when asked if injuries were to blame for struggling at the plate.

In either case, Freeman isn’t using his health as an excuse for his poor performance over the course of the past month. His current focus is on putting in the work and letting the results follow.

“Did the net drill many, many times last few days, but still not clicking. A couple better swings tonight, so hopefully I can build on that,” he said last week.

“Yeah, I’ve been frustrated for about six weeks now. It’ll click at some point, just keep grinding.”

Freddie Freeman advances in All-Star Game voting

Phase 1 of 2025 MLB All-Star Game voting closed on June 27 and by the afternoon, the Dodgers were revealed to have eight players who advanced to the next phase.

Freeman, Will Smith, Tommy Edman, Max Muncy, Mookie Betts, Teoscar Hernández and Andy Pages were among those who reached the point of All-Star Game finalists.

As the top vote-getter among all National League players, Shohei Ohtani secured his spot in the lineup for the 95th Midsummer Classic.

For Freeman, the possibility to be the NL’s starting first baseman at Truist Park comes with added sentimental value because of his history with the Atlanta Braves franchise.

He said he would be especially appreciative to start in the 2025 All-Star Game.
