The Los Angeles Dodgers are flush with organizational talent at the catcher position and included in that is Connor Wong, who was named Texas League Player of the Month for August. He joins Omar Estevez (July) as Tulsa Drillers players to earn the honor this season.

Wong began the 2019 campaign with High-A Rancho Cucamonga, where he appeared in 71 games in a second stint with the Quakes before earning a promotion to Double-A in the middle of July. The 23-year-old batted .412/.463/.742 with five doubles, nine home runs and 26 RBI in August.

Wong began to peak at the close of the month, producing six three-hit performances in the final seven games before the calendar turned to September. Wong’s production helped Tulsa return to the Texas League Playoffs for a third consecutive season.

His homer represented the Drillers’ only run in their Game 1 loss to the Arkansas Travelers in the opener of a best-of-five North Division series. Tulsa bounced back with a win in Game 2 to even the series.

The winner advances to the Texas League Championship Series, which the Drillers claimed last year.

The Dodgers selected Wong in the third round of the 2017 MLB Draft. He debut with the Arizona League Dodgers, though only spent one game with the affiliate before joining Low-A Great Lakes. Wong then spent the entirety of 2018 with the Quakes.

He’s ranked the No. 28 prospect in the Dodgers organization by MLB Pipeline. However, Wong may face somewhat of a block with the Dodgers given the presence of Austin Barnes, Diego Cartaya, Keibert Ruiz and Will Smith.
