Dodgers News: Dave Roberts In Favor Of Pitch Clock & And Ban On Shifts

The 2023 season is set to bring more changes to MLB as three new rules will be implemented after the joint competition committee approved them last month.

After experimenting with it at the Minor League levels in recent seasons, a pitch clock is coming to the Majors. Defensive shifts for infielders will also be banned, and larger bases will be used.

A pitch timer and restrictions on shifting are monumental changes that could have a significant impact on games. They are designed to improve pace of play and increase action, which have been longtime goals of MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes the new rules will be welcome additions to the league, via SportsNet LA:

“I think the pitch clock is good because it keeps the pace of play. I think that’s a good thing. And I think the shift, now that I kind of think about it a little bit more, is good in the sense that offense has been suppressed so much, that if you can knock a ball through a hole to create offense, I think that’s a good thing. And it will also bring into play some athletic plays from infielders now that there’s not as much ground to cover.”

As Roberts noted, the pitch clock is intended to improve pace of play and reduce dead time. The rule states a pitcher must begin his motion before the expiration of the 15-second timer, or 20 seconds with at least one runner on base.

Furthermore, infielders must also be positioned on each side of second base when the pitch is released, and all four infielders must have both feet within the outer boundary of the infield when the pitcher is on the rubber. They may not switch sides unless there is a substitution.

In an effort to improve player safety and encourage teams to steal more frequently, the size of first, second and third base is increasing from the standard 15″ square to an 18″ square.

After winning a franchise-record 111 games during the regular season, the Dodgers were upset by the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series.

Roberts has not yet processed the disappointing ending to his team’s season but acknowledged there is a lot to be proud of.
