Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts may lead the team that’s between the Boston Red Sox and a World Series, but he nonetheless is revered by the organization and city alike. So much so that he was invited to be part of the celebration that recognizes the 2004 Red Sox championship team.

The group is due to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to Game 2 at Fenway Park. While honored, Roberts is passing on the opportunity to join his former teammates. “I’ll be there to watch and see those guys throw out the first pitch,” he said.

“I’m going to be getting ready for a game. So I’ll have fun with those guys but, yeah, I won’t be a part of it.”

Roberts is of course remembered for his stolen base in Game 4 of the 2004 American League Championship Series. The Red Sox were down three games to none in the series, and wound up rattling off four consecutive wins.

That propelled them to the World Series, which Boston then won for their first championship in 86 years. Returning to Fenway Park has brought forth fond memories for Roberts, who received a warm applause during pregame introductions on Friday.

He’s also remained welcomed by fans in the city in light of the matchup. “I’ve kind of tried to lay low,” he said, “but some of the fans that I did see, they’re still more on the supportive side. So the series hadn’t started yet, so they’re still supporting me and thanking me. We’ll see if that changes.”
