Dodgers News: Clayton Kershaw Not Included On Team USA Roster For 2017 WBC

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw was not included on Team USA’s roster for the 2017 World Baseball Classic, nor was he included in their designated pitcher pool. A rule change that permits teams to add two pitchers was implemented with hope of luring Kershaw and others into participating in the WBC.

There was early optimism Kershaw would suit up for Team USA, though the expectations cooled as the offseason wore on. Speaking during a press conference at Dodger Stadium last month, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman essentially ruled out the possibility of Kershaw participating.

USA manager Jim Leyland will have a starting rotation comprised of Detroit’s Michael Fulmer, Kansas City’s Danny Duffy, Oakland’s Sonny Gray, Seattle’s Drew Smyly, Toronto’s J.A. Happ and Marcus Stroman, Tampa Bay’s Chris Archer and Washington’s Tanner Roark.

Nationals ace Max Scherzer had committed to pitch for his former skipper in the WBC, but was forced to withdraw due to a stress fracture in the knuckle of his right finger.

Former Dodgers backup catcher A.J. Ellis will represent the United States as one of three players expected to handle duties behind the plate. He’s also the lone player on the Team USA roster with any ties to the Dodgers.

Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager gave consideration to playing for USA, though he was not included on the roster. Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, relief pitcher Vidal Nuño and outfielder prospect Alex Verdugo were named to the Mexican roster.

So too was Sergio Romo, who is expected to sign with the Dodgers. Meanwhile, Julio Urias was included in Mexico’s designated pitcher pool, and may be seen in the later rounds.

Team USA is in Pool C and begins play March 10 at Marlins Park. Dodger Stadium will host the semifinals and final March 20-22. The United States has never finished higher than fourth place (2009) in the WBC.
