Brock Stewart joined High-A Rancho Cucamonga on a rehab assignment Saturday, but fell well short of reaching his targeted workload. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the right-hander was penciled to throw two or three innings for the Quakes.

Stewart threw 23 pitches and failed to make it out of the first inning. He retired just one batter, allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, issued one walk, and had one strikeout. What’s next for Stewart is unclear.

In addition to outlining the goal with the Quakes, Roberts said Stewart would then join Triple-A Oklahoma City and pitch three or four innings. Stewart was expected to be reevaluated after his start with OKC.

Los Angeles at that point planned to determine whether the 25-year-old would continue as a starting pitcher to be utilized as a long reliever.

Stewart has been sidelined since Spring Training due to tendinitis in his throwing shoulder. Stewart appeared in just two Cactus League games, the last of which was on March 4, before giving way to the shoulder trouble.

He allowed seven runs on five hits, including one home run, hit two batters and issued one walk across 3.1 innings pitched in the two relief appearances.

Last season, Stewart made his MLB debut and went 2-2 with a 5.79 and 1.61 WHIP in seven games (five starts) with the Dodgers.
