Dodgers News: Brock Stewart Claimed Off Waivers By Blue Jays

Amid the frenzy during the final minutes counting down to the MLB trade deadline, the Toronto Blue Jays claimed Brock Stewart off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Stewart’s departure frees up a spot on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.

It also marks the end of an up-and-down career with the organization. He was selected by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the 2014 Draft and unexpectedly made his MLB debut in 2016.

Although Stewart showed flashes of potential, he never carved out a role and found himself as a swingman. The right-hander was used sporadically in each of the past four seasons.

In 36 career games (11 starts) for the Dodgers, Stewart went 2-3 with one save, a 5.46 ERA, 5.71 FIP and 1.61 WHIP. The bulk of those appearances came in 2017, when Stewart pitched to a 3.41 ERA in 17 games (four starts).

Injuries in the starting rotation created a domino effect that led to an opportunity for the 27-year-old. He was included on the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster this season but only made three appearances out of the bullpen before being optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Stewart went 5-7 with a 7.34 ERA and 1.80 WHIP in 17 games (16 starts) for OKC this year. Stewart is a career 12-11 with a 4.27 ERA over parts of four seasons in Triple-A.
