As the Los Angeles Dodgers began Spring Training this year pitchers and catchers were joined in camp by several position players who reported to Camelback Ranch early. With the exception of Andrew Toles, all players ultimately were in camp by their expected arrival date.

The Dodgers did not provide details on Toles’ absence, other than to classify it as a “personal matter,” and offering their full support of the outfielder. Manager Dave Roberts admitted to being surprised by Toles not reporting sand said he was uncertain when he might join the team.

The Dodgers proceeded to complete Spring Training without Toles ever joining them in camp. He reported to extended Spring Training at the end of April to begin working out ahead of likely joining Triple-A Oklahoma City.

However, Toles again is no longer with the organization, according to Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:

Andrew Toles is no longer working out at Camelback Ranch. No details. #Dodgers mgr Dave Roberts said he thinks Toles left to spend time with his family.

With the uncertainty surrounding Toles’ status, the Dodgers previously placed him on the restricted list to open a spot on their 40-man roster. Toles’ off-the-field situation is another hurdle he’s encountered since a rapid rise in 2016.

Toles made his MLB debut that year, went on to appear in 48 games and come October was starting in left field for the Dodgers as they began postseason play. He went into 2017 figuring to factor into the team’s outfield plans but suffered a torn ACL in early May.

The recovery led to Toles spending essentially all of 2018 with Oklahoma City. He suffered a hamstring strain while with the affiliate and the injury wound up lingering longer than anticipated.

As a result, Toles only played in 71 games for OKC and was with the Dodgers for just 17. Considering Toles hasn’t gone through much baseball activity and where the Dodgers are in the season, it appears unlikely the 27-year-old will join the club this year.
