Dodgers News: Alex Wood Placed On Disabled List, Brandon Morrow Called Up From Oklahoma City

The Los Angeles Dodgers purchased the contract of Brandon Morrow and placed Alex Wood on the 10-day disabled list with left SC joint inflammation, retroactive to May 27. Brock Stewart was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room for Morrow on the Dodgers 40-man roster.

Morrow went 0-5 with a 5.71 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 17 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City. Though, Morrow sported a 1.74 ERA in his past 10 outings. He exclusively pitched out of the bullpen.

The right-hander was 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over 13 Cactus League games this year. The 32-year-old at one point allowed just two runs (one earned) in 8.1 innings over eight relief appearances during Spring Training.

Morrow was signed by the Dodgers to a Minor League contract last January. His deal includes a bonus for reaching the Majors and games pitched with Los Angeles.

Coincidentally, Morrow’s contract included an opt-out clause had he not joined the Dodgers by June 1.

Over parts of 10 seasons with the Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres, Morrow is 45-43 with a 4.16 ERA, 3.92 FIP and 1.35 WHIP in 254 games (113 starts). Last season was Morrow’s first as a full-time reliever.

He converted to a role out of the bullpen in part due to battling multiple throughout his career. After overcoming shoulder fatigue, Morrow yielded a 1.69 ERA, 4.33 FIP and 1.38 WHIP in 16 innings over 18 games with the Padres.

Wood’s injury comes at an inopportune time, as he’s in the midst of a dominant stretch that’s produced 25.1 consecutive scoreless innings. Wood is 6-0 with a 1.69 ERA, 1.85 FIP and 1.00 WHIP in 10 games (eight starts).

He was scheduled to start Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, and the rotation spot presumably will be filled by Hyun-Jin Ryu. Wood becomes the 21st different player the Dodgers have put on the DL this season.

Stewart began the season on the 10-day DL due to right shoulder tendinitis. He started a rehab assignment with High-A Rancho Cucamonga over the weekend, but failed to complete one inning of work. The earliest he can be activated is Thursday.
