The Athletics played their final game in Oakland last week, marking the end of an era for the franchise, city and Major League Baseball.

The A’s have called Oakland their home since 1968 but will be temporarily relocating to Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento from 2025 through the 2027 season until their new stadium in Las Vegas is ready to be opened. They will also have the option to remain in West Sacramento for an additional year if obstacles arise with the construction of their stadium.

The A’s move comes after more than two decades of failed efforts to secure a new stadium in Oakland. Both the city of Oakland and A’s fans hoped for a solution, but team ownership appeared motivated to relocate.

Max Muncy, who began his career with the A’s, is sad to see the franchise leave Oakland but expressed excitement for their move to Las Vegas, via Ron Futrell of Vegas Strong Sports:

“It’s exciting. Obviously what’s happened in Oakland is an absolute travesty, but it’s always exciting when you’re talking about going to a new place that you haven’t really been to a whole lot in terms of the big league schedule. But I feel for the fans in Oakland. Having played for them for a couple years, they’re great people, great fans. They love the A’s. They actually have a huge fanbase. It’s very, very sad what’s going on there. But in terms of the move from a different perspective, it is exciting to come here.”

Muncy had an opportunity to play in Las Vegas this season when he was on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He faced the Las Vegas Aviators and had a chance to meet the A’s prospect of the same name.

The A’s selected the younger infielder with the 25th overall pick of the 2021 MLB Draft. Los Angeles Dodgers director of amateur scouting Billy Gasparino said at the time that L.A. would have considered picking Muncy if he fell to No. 29.

“You know, we were rooting for that because it would just be such a cool story,” Gasparino said. “I don’t know for sure, but I loved that concept. I’ll just tell you that. I loved it.”

Blake Treinen: ‘Hard’ to accept A’s leaving Oakland

Blake Treinen, who previously played for the A’s over parts of three seasons, said he is disappointed with the franchise’s planned relocation to Las Vegas.
