Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was presented with the “Citizen’s Honor Award” by the Okinawa Prefecture prior to Saturday’s game at Dodger Stadium.

Roberts also caught the ceremonial first pitch from Denny Tamaki, who is governor of Okinawa. The Okinawa Prefecture Honor Award is given to individuals who are widely respected by its people and have made outstanding achievements in the fields of academics, sports, arts and culture.

Roberts, who was born in Naha on May 31, 1972, to an American father in the Marines and a Japanese mother, was previously celebrated during the offseason by mayor Satoru Chinen at city hall with the Naha City Honor Award.

It was the first time Roberts visited Okinawa in 21 years, and it became an emotional experience as he shared a message to the city.

“Winning the World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, for the city of Los Angeles, was incredible, an incredible challenge, but the final piece for me was to come to Naha, to be with my people and celebrate with you guys together,” Roberts said. “So now, my journey for 2024 is finally complete.”

Roberts still has family and friends in Okinawa, and returned with his son, Cole, on the trip as well.

“Okinawa will always be home for me,” he said.

Roberts concluded by giving a hug to a Naha city council member, posing for photos and receiving a framed certificate to commemorate the honor.

“This hug, will be me giving a hug to everyone in Okinawa,” he said.

Dave Roberts humbled to be recognized

Roberts was appreciative to receive another honor from Okinawa, particularly given the added significance for his family.

“That’s a big award. It’s not just the city of Naha, it’s the country of Okinawa. I’m excited. My mom is really excited about it,” he told DodgerBlue.com. “To be recognized by Okinawa is pretty remarkable, given that was my birthplace, family there.

“It’s a huge honor.”
