Dodgers Injury Updates: Andrew Heaney & Blake Treinen Haven’t Resumed Throwing

The Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff is down several key members as Andrew Heaney and Blake Treinen were both placed on the 10-day injured list last week due to shoulder discomfort.

Heaney followed his impressive Dodgers debut by tossing six scoreless innings of one-hit ball against the Cincinnati Reds last week before experiencing soreness in his left shoulder.

Meanwhile, Treinen hasn’t pitched since April 14 because of right shoulder trouble and initially was expected to return for last weekend’s series against the San Diego Padres.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is optimistic both pitchers will be back sooner than later, but revealed neither has resumed throwing since landing on the IL, via SportsNet LA:

“Andrew is still not playing catch yet, so right now Tyler is still going to be in the rotation and pitching every fifth day. … Blake is not throwing at all. He’s back in L.A. with some staff that we have there. I don’t know his timeline; it shouldn’t be too long of having him down. It’s just shoulder inflammatin, so hopefully he’ll be back sooner than later.”

Heaney, who has dealt with shoulder tightness in the past, felt discomfort when trying to play catch last week. “He tried to play catch [last Wednesday], and it didn’t feel great, which ultimately led us to make that decision,” Roberts previously said of the team placing Heaney on the IL.

“So when he’ll pick up a baseball again, I’m not sure.”

As for Treinen, he was scheduled to throw off a mound the same day Heaney was shut down from baseball activities.

Heaney & Treinen impacted by shortened Spring Training

Roberts expressed a belief the short Spring Training coming out of the MLB lockout is partly to blame for Heaney and Treinen sustaining shoulder injuries.

With Heaney sidelined, the Dodgers have turned to Tyler Anderson to fill the void in the starting rotation for the time being. In the bullpen, Evan Phillips is among those who will be relied on more heavily in Treinen’s absence.
