Dodgers Injury Update: Tony Cingrani To Head To Arizona After Throwing Bullpen Session

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitching staff has been riddled by injuries this season, and while the club saw the returns of key pitchers in recent weeks, there remains a plethora of arms sidelined for the time being.

That holds true for left-hander Tony Cingrani, who has been shelved since the beginning of June with a left shoulder strain. Prior to being placed on the disabled list, the southpaw had noticeably struggled with pitch velocity, which presumably stemmed from his injury.

Cingrani recently resumed baseball-relateed activities and cleared a hurdle in throwing a mild bullpen session, per J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group:

Tony Cingrani threw a light bullpen in the 20-to-25 pitch range, Roberts said. His next stop: Arizona, where he will continue his left shoulder rehab at the Dodgers’ facility.

That Cingrani is pitching off a mound again is certainly a good sign in potentially rejoining the Dodgers in the near future. His recovery efforts were previously put on hold in the middle of June after he tweaked his shoulder during a throwing program.

Cingrani is among four Dodgers pitchers scheduled to begin rehab assignments with the club’s Arizona Fall League affiliate, along with fellow relievers Pedro Baez and Josh Fields, as well as starter Hyun-Jin Ryu.

When Cingrani is cleared and returns to the Dodgers bullpen, he offers another solid left-handed relief option to complement Scott Alexander.

In 22.1 innings pitched this season (28 games), Cingrani has compiled a 4.84 ERA, 2.13 FIP and 1.03 WHIP with 36 strikeouts to only six walks. He proved to be an essential part of the Dodgers postseason run in 2017, so getting him healthy for the second half of the season is definitely a priority for Los Angeles.
