Noah Syndergaard lasted just one inning in his start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday due to what the Los Angeles Dodgers described was a cut on his right index finger.

Prior to throwing his first pitch of the game, Syndergaard walked off the field with a Dodgers trainer in order to receive treatment. He returned to the mound and worked around a small jam to protect the team’s 2-0 lead.

After Syndergaard was removed from his start, a SportsNet LA camera captured the right-hander showing his bloodied index finger in the dugout.

Syndergaard revealed he sustained the cut on his finger a few weeks ago during a bullpen session and that it isn’t painful, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News:

“It happened a couple weeks ago in a bullpen,” Syndergaard said of the origin of what he alternately described as a cut or a blister. “It doesn’t really affect me pain-wise. I just think my finger catches a seam or the opposing thumbnail might be causing an issue. Not quite sure. I warmed up fine in the bullpen then went to use the rest room before the game and looked down and my hand was bleeding pretty good.”

Syndergaard added that he has experienced these types of injuries several times throughout his career and there is no way to prevent them from happening:

Syndergaard said it was “nothing out of the ordinary” and he has dealt with “various blisters, fingernail stuff all throughout my career. It’s just kind of random when it happens.”

“That’s just the nature of the beast of being a pitcher, I guess,” Syndergaard said.

Syndergaard’s finger issue is unfortunate timing as the Dodgers gave him extra rest to work on his mechanics and reset mentally. The right-hander is 1-3 with a 6.12 ERA, 4.77 FIP and 1.42 WHIP in 32.1 innings pitched this season (seven starts).

Syndergaard had his finger covered but continued throwing before Wednesday’s game at American Family Field. The Dermabond ointment that Syndergaard had applied on Tuesday night didn’t hold and thus forced him out of the game.

Will Dodgers place Noah Syndergaard on injured list?

The Dodgers will decide in the coming days if Syndergaard will need a stint on the 15-day injured list. If he does need to miss some time, his spot in the rotation presumably will be filled by Gavin Stone returning from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
