Are Dodgers Trying To Benefit From Tyler Glasnow Going On Injured List?

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost yet another member of their starting rotation on Tuesday when they placed Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injured list due to lower back tightness.

Glasnow’s IL stint was backdated to July 6, which was the day after he last pitched for the team. The right-hander allowed five runs and collected seven strikeouts over six innings in the series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Glasnow’s troubles were isolated to the fourth inning, when he surrendered a grand slam to Rhys Hoskins.

“I just think that inning, timing was a little weird. Not executing and kind of falling behind. A heater up, and he put a good barrel on it,” Glasnow said after the game.

Now the 30-year-old joins Walker Buehler, Tony Gonsolin, Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, Emmet Sheehan and Yoshinobu Yamamoto as Dodgers starting pitchers on the injured list.

Gonsolin, Kershaw, May and Sheehan haven’t pitched at any point this season. Gonsolin may miss all of 2024 and Sheehan is out until some time next year, but Kershaw and May are both making progress toward taking the mound this season.

Tyler Glasnow benefitting from injured list?

Glasnow has thrown 109 innings this season, which is the third-highest total of his career. He set a career high with 120 innings pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays last season and has otherwise surpassed 100 just one other time — in 2018 — with 111.2.

Glasnow is on track to shatter his career high for innings pitched this year, even with the back injury. Due the timing of the IL stint, it’s plausible Glasnow only misses one start. He had been lined up to take the ball Thursday in the series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The break in the schedule could ultimately bode well for Glasnow as the Dodgers look to manage his workload heading into the postseason.

Manager Dave Roberts had previously indicated the team planned on providing their ace with some sort of break down the stretch of the season.

This is the first time in Glasnow’s career he’s been put on the injured list because of a back issue. Glasnow previously has dealt with right forearm, right elbow and left oblique injuries.

When can Glasnow return to Dodgers?

Glasnow is eligible to be activated off the injured list during the All-Star break and given the Dodgers’ optimism, it’s reasonable to believe he will be available for their July 19-21 series with the Boston Red Sox.
