Dodgers Injuries: Tommy Edman Bothered By Ankle Soreness

The past several days have been anything but ordinary for Tommy Edman, beginning with not being in the lineup for Monday’s game against the Miami Marlins. It was the first time this season he didn’t start.

Edman still wound up making an impact that night as entered off the bench in the eighth inning and later delivered a walk-off hit to get the Los Angeles Dodgers a win in extra innings. Edman returned to the lineup on Tuesday, though tweaked his ankle when sliding into second base.

He was held out of the finale against the Marlins but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts anticipated Edman returning by Saturday at the latest. That didn’t come to be, however, as Edman was put on the 10-day injured list due to right ankle inflammation.

According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Roberts said Edman was dealing with soreness in his right ankle:

“Tommy ran yesterday and just still didn’t feel great, still some soreness in his ankle,” Roberts said. “Didn’t feel he could play tonight or even tomorrow, potentially. So just the backdate, knowing that it’s potentially 10 days to make sure he gets it right. We just felt that it was an easier decision.

While he wasn’t in the lineup on Friday, Edman did go through a workout at Truist Park. It included fielding ground balls, hitting the batting cage and some running, and Roberts surmised he would potentially be available to pinch-hit.

Given that Edman wound up on the injured list the following afternoon, he presumably was not an option in the Dodgers’ 2-1 win. The only player the Dodgers used off the bench in the series opener was Chris Taylor as a pinch-runner late in the game.

Edman and the Dodgers have generally downplayed the right ankle issue, but it is the same one he sprained last year while on a rehab assignment. That injury, coupled with the recovery process from offseason surgery, delayed Edman’s 2024 debut until the middle of August — well after he had been traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the Dodgers.

Hyeseong Kim replaces Tommy Edman

The Dodgers recalled Hyeseong Kim from Triple-A Oklahoma City as the corresponding move to Edman going on the injured list. Though, it was Taylor who started at second base on Saturday.

Kim is expected to fill a bench role until Edman is eligible to return, which is May 10 because the Dodgers backdated his IL stint.
