Dodgers Highlights: Will Smith, Trayce Thompson Supply Power Against Rockies

The Los Angeles Dodgers received home runs from Will Smith and Trayce Thompson, and Julio Urías turned in a strong start to get a 5-4 win against the Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers now are on a three-game winning streak and can clinch the series at Coors Field on Saturday.

Trea Turner again helped set the table in the first inning with a single that extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Two batters later, Smith connected for a two-run homer, one his xx hits on the night. For his career, Smith is now batting .339/.423/.694 at Coors Field.

In what seemingly was an extension from the series opener, the Rockies’ defense again was lacking. Kris Bryant dropped a relatively routine fly ball hit to the corner in left field to result in a double for Cody Bellinger in the second inning.

Thompson immediately took advantage by following with a two-run home run that gave the Dodgers a 4-0 lead.

Then in the third inning, walks by Freddie Freeman and Smith were followed by a fielding error that loaded the bases. Gavin Lux had a productive at-bat with his sacrifice fly extending the Dodgers’ lead to 5-2.

Chad Kuhl was removed after 3.2 innings in a performance that was a far cry from his complete-game shutout against the Dodgers on June 27. While that was a high point for Kuhl, he’s allowed 22 earned runs in 20.2 innings over his last five starts since that dominant start.

Urías adds to strong showing by Dodgers starters

Julio Urías entered the night with a career 5.81 ERA in 11 games (nine starts) at Coors Field, but he held the Rockies to just two runs over seven innings.

Tyler Anderson and Urías completing seven innings on back-to-back nights was key for a Dodgers bullpen that was looking to reset heading into the four-game series.

Evan Phillips was perfect in the eighth inning but Craig Kimbrel allowed two runs in the ninth and was bailed out by Thompson making a running catch in foul territory to end the game.
