Dodgers Highlights: Trayce Thompson Hits 3-Run Homer Against Rockies

Trayce Thompson brought the fireworks as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Independence Day to give the team eight straight wins on the Fourth of July.

The Dodgers and Rockies were locked into a pitchers duel for the first four innings before José Iglesias hit a solo homer off Julio Urías to put the Rockies up 1-0.

However, the Dodgers quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning. Justin Turner hit a one-out single, which was followed by Chris Taylor drawing a walk. Then on a full-count, Thompson lined a go-ahead, three-run home run to left field.

That was followed by Cody Bellinger roping a ground-rule double to right field and he later advanced to third base. Bellinger came around to score and increase the Dodgers’ lead to three runs when Mookie Betts singled past Iglesias.

The Dodgers added an insurance run in the seventh inning, which was started by a leadoff walk from Bellinger. Although the Dodgers then had back-to-back strikeouts, Trea Turner lined a double into left-center field to drive in Bellinger.

L.A. carried that advantage into the ninth inning, but with Craig Kimbrel unavailable and a four-run lead, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts turned to Reyes Moronta to try to finish the game.

Moronta allowed a solo home run to C.J. Cron, but then retired the next two hitters. However, that was followed by single and walk to put the tying run at the plate, so Roberts called on Yency Almonte.

Almonte quickly allowed an RBI single to Charlie Blackmon to give the Rockies their third run of the game and put the tying run on base. But Almonte was able to save the game by striking out former Dodgers’ farmhand Connor Joe to end it and earn his first save of the season.

Dodgers get strong outing from Urías

Urías continued his All-Star worthy season by throwing six innings and allowing just one run while striking out seven and walking one. Urías lowered his season ERA to 2.57 across 87.2 innings with 83 strikeouts.

In June, Urías went 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in five starts. The 25-year-old attributed the success to making adjustments with his mechanics that allowed him to be more consistent.
