Dodgers Highlights: Mookie Betts Home Run, Tony Gonsolin Is Lights Out Vs. Angels

The Los Angeles Dodgers rebound from being swept over the weekend with a 2-0 win over the L.A. Angels in the opener of the Freeway Series. Tony Gonsolin improved his record to a Major League-best 8-0 and for the third time this season put a halt to a losing streak.

Gonsolin held the Angels to just one hit over six shutout innings. He held the Angels hitless until the fourth inning when Shohei Ohtani lined a single to right field. Ohtani was wiped from the bases shortly after when thrown out by Will Smith on a stolen base attempt.

After Gonsolin recorded one out in the seventh inning, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts went to the bullpen. Gonsolin was disappointed to be removed but nevertheless extended his streak of consecutive starts with at least six innings pitched to six, dating back to May 16.

The 28-year-old lowered his ERA to 1.42, which is ahead San Diego Padres’ Joe Musgrove’s 1.50 ERA for the best mark in baseball.

The Dodgers struck first after Noah Syndergaard created his own traffic in the fourth inning on a walk to Freddie Freeman, a single by Trea Turner, putting Will Smith on to load the bases. Syndergaard then walked Justin Turner to break up the scoreless tie.

The Dodgers’ lead remained 1-0 until the eighth inning when Mookie Betts showed signs of life with a solo home run.

The ninth inning started off as planned as Craig Kimbrel struck out Taylor Ward, but a shattered bat flare single to center field that deflected off of Gavin Lux’s glove allowed Mike Trout to reach base.

The bat hit home plate umpire Nate Tomlinson in the face, and thankfully he avoided serious injury, but a nine-minute delay cooled off Kimbrel. Ohtani doubled when play resumed and Matt Duffy drew a walk to load the bases.

Kimbrel worked out of the jam by striking out Jared Walsh and Max Stassi.
