Dodgers Highlights: Mookie Betts Home Run, Max Muncy Benefits From Brett Baty Getting Hit In Face

The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their winning streak to a season-high-tying six games by defeating the New York Mets, 5-1, behind Mookie Betts providing a big swing and late offense taking advantage of sloppy defense.

Betts went 4-for-4 with a walk in the Dodgers win, and he opened the scoring with an opposite-field home run in the third inning. Betts is now up to 27 home runs this season, which is just eight away from tying a career high that was set in 2022.

The Dodgers remained ahead 1-0 until Tony Gonsolin hung a curveball that Brandon Nimmo sent sailing over the fence in center field for a game-tying home run in the fourth inning.

The game remained tied until the Mets’ defense began to slip up. After Max Muncy and J.D. Martinez executed a hit and run, Pete Alonso could not turn an inning-ending double play after coming up with David Peralta’s grounder.

Fransisco Lindor needed to jump to field Alonso’s throw and take a second step to touch the base before he could attempt to double up Peralta at first. Peralta beat the throw, allowing Muncy to score the go-ahead run.

In the ninth inning, Muncy’s infield pop-up with runners at the corners was inexplicably dropped by Brett Baty. The ball bounced to Baty’s left and hit him in the face, allowing Betts to scamper home from third base.

Martinez and Peralta each added an RBI single to create more separation for the Dodgers in their win.

Dodgers pitching

Gonsolin held the Mets to just the one run, but only completed five innings despite throwing just 54 pitches. Gonsolin’s exit was due to the Mets regularly making hard contact throughout his outing.

After Alex Vesia and Brusdar Graterol were first out of the Dodgers bullpen, but it was Caleb Ferguson who faced trouble in the eighth.

Chris Taylor cutting off a ball in the left-center field gap saved a run. New York did have runners on the corners with nobody out after the long single, but Ferguson retired the next three batters faced. It included ending the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
