Dodgers Highlights: Miguel Vargas, Austin Barnes & Max Muncy Contribute In Walk-Off Win Against Phillies

The Los Angeles Dodgers staged a thrilling comeback in Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies — clawing their way back from a five-run deficit to earn a 10-6 walk-off win that completed an undefeated homestand.

The Phillies took advantage of Gavin Stone in his MLB debut to take an early lead. The Arkansas native was the Dodgers’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2022 but struggled against the Phillies right off the bat and wasn’t aided by the defense.

Stone only allowed one run in the first inning despite Philadelphia twice loading the bases, but he wasn’t nearly as fortunate in the third. The Phillies strung together a two-out rally and were up 5-0 before Stone could get through the inning.

Mookie Betts got the Dodgers on the board in the bottom of the third on a base hit to left field that Kyle Schwarber wasn’t able to cleanly field.

With one on and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Miguel Vargas hit a two-run homer to left-center field on a mistake pitch down the middle by Aaron Nola. The homer put the Dodgers within striking distance at 5-3.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the seventh, when Chris Taylor stretched what would have been a single into a triple after Nick Castellanos was unable to get to a pop-up in time.

The hit knocked Nola out of the game and he was replaced by Seranthony Domínguez.

With one out, and runners on first and third base, Freddie Freeman almost hit one out of the park, but it caught on the warning track. It was, however, deep enough to drive in Taylor on a sacrifice fly to bring the Dodgers within a run.

The Dodgers wouldn’t score again that inning, but Austin Barnes came in clutch during the eighth.

Coming off the bench as a pinch-hitter with two outs and runners on second and third, Barnes smoked a ball that snuck past Edmundo Sosa at third base to drive in both runs and put the Dodgers ahead 6-5.

While the Phillies were able to answer in the ninth by tying the game, Miguel Rojas made the highlight reel by bare-handing a Baltimore chop to throw out the speedy Trea Turner.

Max Muncy made sure the play ultimately wasn’t all for naught by blasting a walk-off grand slam against former teammate Craig Kimbrel.

Dodgers bullpen contains Phillies

During Tuesday’s 13-1 blowout against the Phillies, the Dodgers bullpen helped keep them at bay after a dominate outing by Julio Urías.

On Wednesday, the bullpen delivered again after a rough start by Stone.

The strong showing began with Victor González, Yency Almonte and Caleb Ferguson combining for 4.1 scoreless innings. Even with Brusdar Graterol blowing the save, the Dodgers bullpen allowed just the one run on two hits and two walks, while recording six strikeouts.
