The Los Angeles Dodgers earned a big sweep over the San Diego Padres during Players’ Weekend at Dodger Stadium, cementing with it a 7-3 comeback victory on Sunday afternoon.
It took a little while for the offense to get going as the Dodgers’ bats didn’t come to life until two outs in the fifth inning. Oddly enough, it began with Hyun-Jin Ryu’s single — his second hit of the day.
Following a Brian Dozier walk, he and Ryu scored on Justin Turner’s clutch double that tied the game. The Dodgers then took the lead for good when Manny Machado launched a two-run home run that barely stayed fair down the left-field line.
That homer was Machado’s 31s this season and second in as many games. The offense was all Turner after that as he drove in two on a single in the sixth inning, and then another run on a double in the eighth to complete the Dodgers’ 7-3 victory.
Turner had five RBI on the day, which tied a career high. Of the six times he’s had such a game, two have come this season — May 17 and Aug. 19.
Overall on the weekend, the Dodgers were able to pick up two games on the Arizona Diamondbacks to get back in the division race. They are now just 2.5 games out of first place in the National League West entering Monday’s off day.
