Dodgers Highlights: Big 9th Inning Stuns Rockies In Comeback Win

The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their modest winning streak to three games by putting together a seven-run ninth inning as they rallied to defeat the Colorado Rockies, 11-9.

The Dodgers trailed 4-0 after the first inning and were down 6-2 through three. The Rockies added onto their lead with a run in the fourth inning, and the teams traded scores in the sixth and seventh.

Up to that point the Dodgers had received home runs from Andy Pages and Shohei Ohtani, and Miguel Vargas contributed with an RBI double.

The improbable comeback in the ninth inning began with Pages’ leadoff walk that was followed by a base hit from Miguel Rojas. Vargas’ walk loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Jason Heyward, who delivered a grand slam to get the Dodgers back within a run.

Ohtani singled but the Dodgers then found themselves down to their last out when Will Smith struck out looking. Freddie Freeman was intentionally walked and the Rockies believed they hung on for a 9-8 win but an appeal to first base umpire Lance Barksdale on a check swing went in favor of Teoscar Hernández.

Rockies manager Bud Black erupted in the dugout and was promptly ejected. Replay appeared to show Hernández did go around and should have been called out to end the game.

Hernández capitalized on the at-bat extending by driving a 101 mph fastball out to right field for what held as a game-winning, three-run home run. Jake Cave immediately turned toward in the field and began shouting in the direction of Barksdale after he watched the ball sail over his head.

Dodgers biggest comebacks

Tuesday’s game represented the biggest ninth-inning comeback in Dodgers franchise history since 1957 and their first time overcoming a five-run deficit in the final frame without going to extras since 1929.
