After dropping the final two games of their series against the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers got back in the win column on Friday against the New York Mets, defeating them, 5-2, at Citi Field.
Both starters, Alex Wood and Zack Wheeler, got into a groove early, with neither team getting on the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning. Consecutive walks by Joc Pederson and Max Muncy with nobody out led to L.A. putting up a crooked number.
Matt Kemp’s flare single loaded the bases with one, then Cody Bellinger, who has been in a bit of a slump in recent weeks, fell behind in the count 0-2 against Wheeler.
The right-hander missed his spot on a fastball up, and Bellinger made him pay, launching a grand slam to the upper deck in right field.
The grand slam was the second of Bellinger’s career, and the home run was his 13th of the season. He has tormented Wheeler in his short career as he took him deep twice last season at Dodger Stadium.
With the Dodgers leading 4-2 in the top of the ninth inning, Yasiel Puig provided Kenley Jansen with an insurance run on a solo shot to left field off Mets reliever Chris Beck for his ninth of the season.
Jansen then pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 19th save of the season. He has converted his last 17 opportunities and after a rough start to the season, lowered his season ERA to 2.34.
