When two of MLB’s most talented pitching staffs face off, there’s always a good chance of a pitcher’s duel, and that’s exactly what happened in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.
Tony Gonsolin was dominant for the Dodgers, pitching seven shutout innings while giving up just two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. For the Brewers, Eric Lauer was nearly as effective, going seven innings and giving up four hits, but two of those happened to leave the yard.
The first came off the bat of Austin Barnes, who hit his fifth home run of the year to open the sixth inning. For Barnes, it was his first game back since being activated off the family emergency list and he finished his day 2-for-3.
In the seventh inning, the Dodgers added to their lead with Max Muncy’s 15th homer of the year to go up 2-0. It was a continuation of Muncy’s red-hot month where he is batting .340 with six home runs, 13 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Following Gonsolin, Caleb Ferguson pitched the eighth inning and allowed his first run of the season. That came when Christian Yelich singled to drive in Tyrone Taylor following two walks, but Ferguson was able to retire Willy Adames to end the inning and keep the Dodgers ahead.
Craig Kimbrel then took over in the ninth inning, looking to pick up his first save of the season in a one-run game after previously going 0-for-4 in those chances, including a blown save on Tuesday.
Kimbrel retired the first two hitters on groundouts, but the Brewers then had two runners reach base with a single and walk. However, Kimbrel was able to earn his 21st save in the 2-1 game by getting Luis Urías to ground out.
Dodgers reporter David Vassegh goes down Brewers slide
Prior to first pitch on Wednesday, Dodgers reporter David Vassegh made his way up to Bernie Brewer’s slide to soak in the experience. Unfortunately for Vassegh, he came away with multiple fractures in his right wrist and six cracked ribs.
Barnes said in his postgame interview the Dodgers dedicated their win to Vassegh.
