DodgerHeads: Analyzing Dodgers’ 2020 MLB Draft Pick Bobby Miller

The Los Angeles Dodgers only had one pick on the first day of the 2020 MLB Draft, which they used to select Bobby Miller out of the University of Louisville at No. 29. Following the selection, “DodgerHeads” host Jeff Spiegel and Dodgers prospect guru Justin Lorber discussed the pick.

Lorber highlighted some of Miller’s attributes and also wondered if the Dodgers would attempt to convert him to utilizing more of a four-seam fastball. Lorber ranked Miller’s secondary pitches and of course touched on the electric arm.

It’s one reason the right-hander said himself he enjoys watching Walker Buehler pitch. The two aren’t exactly similar in stature, but have similar velocity on their respective fastballs.

Miller did some questions about his command but seemingly improved behind changed mechanics. “His size, his athleticism, he averaged a 95 mph fastball, and I think those three ingredients make a good foundation to start,” Dodgers vice president of amateur scouting Billy Gasparino said.

“And then you start layering on how improved his secondary pitches were, the multiple plus ones, and the character and makeup. All of our intel was very strong on him.”

Miller, 21, made four starts for the Cardinals in 2020, going 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA and 34 strikeouts against nine walks. He recorded three quality starts in four chances, striking out a career-high 12 batters over 6.2 innings on Feb. 22 against Valparaiso University

In three seasons with Louisville, Miller went 15-2 record with a 3.28 ERA. “Tremendous night for the Dodgers and we are ecstatic to select Bobby,” Gasparino added.

“He’s a very talented pitcher with huge upside that we are looking forward to developing into a quality Major League pitcher. His work ethic and character will fit in well with our current culture.”

Spiegel and Lorber will return Monday to do a full recap of the 2020 MLB Draft. The Dodgers have the Nos. 60 and 66 selections, and one each in the third, fourth and fifth rounds.
