Dave Roberts: Dodgers’ Schedule Providing ‘Good Test’ With Playoff Teams

The Los Angeles Dodgers have largely coasted through the first two months of the regular season, but they are in the midst of what is arguably the toughest part of their 2025 schedule.

The Dodgers are facing a stretch of 26 consecutive games against teams with a winning record, which began Friday with a 7-5 win over the New York Mets in 13 innings.

The Dodgers’ upcoming schedule includes additional games against the Mets, plus matchups with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Guardians, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.

Manager Dave Roberts believes the next month of play will be a good challenge for the Dodgers, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:

“Obviously playing teams that are talented, that are playing well, we’re going to be forced to play really good baseball, or consistently well, to win more than we lose,” Roberts said.

“But this is going to be a good test for us. You can’t run away from the fact that we’re playing some good teams.”

As Roberts noted, the Dodgers will need to perform well if they want to finish this current stretch with a winning record and keep pace in the National League West standings.

The Dodgers enter Sunday with a 32-20 record, which is good for first place in the NL West and a two-game lead over the Giants. Not far behind are the Padres (three games back) and Arizona Diamondbacks (six).

The Dodgers will host the Giants for three games from June 13-15, which marks their first head-to-head matchups of the season. The teams will face each other 13 times in the regular season, with seven of those taking place during September.

Dave Roberts explains how Dodgers pitchers can improve

Along with injuries plaguing the staff, Dodgers pitchers have fallen behind in counts too early and too often this season. Roberts recently acknowledged that the team needs their starters to step up with more consistent performances.

“I think for me, just kind of first glance, we need to be better at getting ahead in counts. I think if you take a deep dive, we start 1-0 quite often. So when you do that, it makes pitching tough,” Roberts said.

“I think we’ve got to start being more efficient — certainly from the starters — to give us an opportunity to win games. The 30-pitch innings just don’t play. They’re not sustainable.

“And that starts with getting strike one, however you acquire it. I think getting strike one, that ultimately goes to our entire pitching staff.”
