As the MLB lockout extended into late February — and eventually early March — multiple Spring Training games were canceled for each team.

With a shortened period to prepare for the regular season, MLB and the Players Association (MLBPA) reportedly agreed to several rule changes that won’t officially go into effect until owners formally vote on them.

Among the changes are expanded rosters, which will allow teams to carry 28 players until May 2. During the period, there will be no restrictions on how many pitchers a club can include on their roster.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts recently said he expects the team to carry more than 14 pitchers on their Opening Day roster, via David Vassegh of AM 570 L.A. Sports Radio:

With starters not expected to provide much length in April, it makes sense that MLB will allow teams to carry more pitchers during the first month of the regular season.

Per multiple reports, roster sizes will drop back down to the traditional 26 players after May 2. Furthermore, teams will be limited to carrying no more than 13 pitchers for the rest of the season.

Buehler named Dodgers’ Opening Day starter vs. Rockies

Roberts also confirmed that Buehler will start for the Dodgers on Opening Day against the Rockies at Coors Field.

The Opening Day start will be a first for Buehler in his career. Kershaw has held the honor a Dodgers’ franchise-record nine times. The Dodgers are 7-2 in Kershaw’s Opening Day starts, with their losses coming to the San Francisco Giants in 2018, and Rockies last year.
