Corey Seager’s 3 Home Runs Help Dodgers Blast Mets

The Los Angeles Dodgers put together yet another offensive onslaught Tuesday night against the New York Mets, matching a season high with five home runs in a 12-0 victory. Corey Seager led the Dodgers with three home runs and six RBI.

The multi-home run game was the fifth of Seager’s career; the other four came last season, and all have taken place at Dodger Stadium. What’s more, the three-home run effort was the second of Seager’s career.

Of course, home runs and the Dodgers wouldn’t be complete without Cody Bellinger. Two batters after Seager’s blast in the first inning, Bellinger deposited a two-run homer into the right-field pavilion.

Perhaps by design to protect the bullpen, Robert Gsellman pitched into the fifth inning. He was removed with one out after allowing a home run to Yasmani Grandal, double to Yasiel Puig, and ground-rule double to Joc Pederson in consecutive at-bats.

Grandal’s home run was his first since June 7, and his first extra-base hit since June 2. Gsellman was ultimately charged for eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits (four home runs) in 4.1 innings pitched.

Pinch-hitter Franklin Gutierrez worked a walk with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. Logan Forsythe’s RBI infield single extended the Dodgers’ lead to 12-0. Seager nearly added a grand slam to his prolific showing, but a drive to left field was caught at the warning track.

Not to be overshadowed, Brandon McCarthy turned in six shutout innings. He limited the Mets to just four hits, issued one walk, and collected four strikeouts. The outing was McCarthy’s six in a row with two earned runs or less allowed.

In his 2017 debut with the Dodgers, Brock Stewart turned in three scoreless innings to earn a save and wrap up the team’s fifth consecutive win.

While the game was a laugher after the fifth inning, the Dodgers did hold their breath as Pederson and Puig nearly repeated their collision that sent Pederson to the seven-day concussion disabled list.

Puig managed to make a backhanded catch while Pederson managed to slow his momentum and fall to the ground.
