Corey Seager Breaks Dodgers Franchise Record For Most Home Runs In Single Season By Shortstop

Corey Seager clubbed a solo home run off Jason Hammel in the first inning on Saturday to pull the Los Angeles Dodgers even with the Chicago Cubs. The homer was Seager’s 23rd of the season, breaking the Dodgers’ all-time record for most home runs in a single season by a shortstop.

Seager’s 20th homer set a new Los Angeles franchise record, surpassing the mark set by Hanley Ramirez in 2013. Up until Saturday, the overall franchise record was held by Glenn Wright, who hit 22 home runs for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1930.

Seager already owns the Dodgers rookie record for most doubles in a season with 37. Eric Karros held the previous record, hitting 30 doubles during his rookie season in 1992.

Although Seager entered the 2016 season as the consensus top prospect in baseball, his success has nonetheless been awe-inspiring.

His strong year has impressed Yasmani Grandal, among others, as the catcher didn’t doubt Seager’s talent, but also didn’t expect his young teammate to fare so well this early in his career.

Seager recently had a 14-game hitting streak snapped. That tied with Carlos Gonzalez and Ender Inciarte for the longest hitting streak this season by National League player.

It was the fourth double-digit hitting streak of his career. Earlier this season Seager strung together 19 consecutive games with at least one hit. The 22-year-old shortstop entered the day batting .323/.377/.541 in 124 games.
