Cavan Biggio Signs With Giants After Release From Dodgers

The San Francisco Giants signed Cavan Biggio to a Minor League contract after he was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers upon being designated for assignment and clearing waivers earlier this month.

Biggio is reporting to Triple-A Sacramento.

The former top prospect was designated for assignment as a corresponding move to Freddie Freeman returning from the restricted list and family emergency leave.

Biggio is eligible for the postseason with the Giants as he’s joined the organization before the 8:59 p.m. PT deadline on Aug. 31. San Francisco currently find themselves five games behind the final Wild Card spot in the National League.

Biggio originally joined the Dodgers in the middle of June when they traded Minor League pitcher Braydon Fisher to the Toronto Blue Jays. L.A. also received cash considerations as part of the deal.

Biggio was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays despite still having Minor League options available. It was presumed that Biggio, who has more than five years of Major League service time, exercised his right to reject an option to the Minors.

The Dodgers planned for Biggio to help fill the void at third base created by Max Muncy’s right oblique strain. However, he also played some first base while Freeman was away from the team, and additionally saw time in right field and second base.

“He’s a baseball player. He’s versatile, can play anywhere essentially on the diamond,” manager Dave Roberts said after Biggio was added to the Dodgers’ roster.

“For us right now, Max the injury is taking longer than we had hoped, and so to get some coverage versus right-handed pitching, running him out there at third base is sort of the plan. And if I have to kick him out, whether it be to center, to right, to second base, during a game for whatever reason, if the game calls for it, we can do that. But yeah, it’s primarily just to play third base versus right-handed pitching.”

Biggio hit .192/.306/.329 with one double, three home runs and 10 RBI over 30 games with the Dodgers. The 29-year-old had improved results in his final seven games with the Dodgers, batting .217/.357/.522 with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored.

Cavan Biggio victim of Dodgers roster crunch

With the Dodgers getting healthier in recent weeks, Biggio was a victim of a roster crunch that has also claimed James Paxton, Ricky Vanasco, Yohan Ramírez, Amed Rosario, Brent Honeywell, Nick Ahmed and Jason Heyward, among others.
