After first showing interest in Brendan Donovan at the 2025 MLB trade deadline, the Los Angeles Dodgers have continued to be linked to the St. Louis Cardinals utility man.
Donovan was an All-Star for the first time this year and demonstrated his versatility by playing three different positions. With the Cardinals going through a transition period, the expectation is that the 28-year-old will be traded this offseason.
Donovan is a logical fit for the Dodgers due to his capability to play second base, shortstop, left field and right field, and being a left-handed bat. He is also relatively inexpensive, with two more years of salary arbitration remaining before becoming a free agent after the 2027 season.
Seemingly for those reasons, L.A. remains interested in a potential Donovan trade with St. Louis, according to Katie Woo and Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic:
The Dodgers also remain interested in exploring the trade market, per league sources, and Brendan Donovan remains on their radar.
It is believed that the Dodgers are looking to add an outfielder this offseason, and while Donovan has primarily appeared at second base in his career, he can play either of the corner spots.
The Dodgers want to get more athletic in the outfield, and with rumors swirling of a possible Teoscar Hernández trade, Donovan would help the team accomplish that goal.
L.A. has also been connected to the Cleveland Guardians’ Steven Kwan, while a bigger splash for Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger figures to be more realistic if they are willing to sign a short-term contract.
Brendan Donovan’s 2025 stats
Donovan hit .287/.353/.422 with 32 doubles, 10 home runs and 50 RBI this past season. He set career highs in batting average and slugging percentage. He also fell just shy of doing so in doubles and homers, which are 34 and 14, respectively.
Donovan spent the bulk of his time this year at second base, where he played 100 games. The 28-year-old additionally appeared in 18 games in left field and six at shortstop. Donovan has played 163 games (139 starts) in left field over his four-year career, and another 30 (23 starts) in right field.
