Brandon Gomes: Dodgers General Manager Position ‘Incredibly Fulfilling’

The Los Angeles Dodgers made multiple changes in their front office that included Brandon Gomes getting promoted to general manager.

Gomes, who had been the Dodgers vice president of baseball operations and assistant general manager since March 2019, became the 12th general manager in franchise history. There was an expectation he would receive a promotion this offseason to keep him in the organization as he was receiving interest from other clubs.

Now that it has happened, Gomes said it has completed one of his goals since he retired as a player and believes it will be a rewarding experience, via Jack Harris of the L.A. Times:

“This is something that, since I got done playing, I was hoping to get to at some point in my career,” Gomes said. “It’s just something that will be incredibly fulfilling, to continue to work with this group with the goal of winning as many championships as possible.”

Gomes, who was acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays while Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman was their general manager, pitched five seasons from 2011 until 2015. After leaving Tampa Bay, he signed a Minor League contract with the Chicago Cubs but did not receive a promotion and was released in June 2016.

Gomes then joined Dodgers in November 2016 as pitching coordinator of performance, with a focus on assisting Minor League pitchers. He was promoted to director of player development in December 2017, filling a void that was created when the Philadelphia Phillies hired Gabe Kapler as manager.

Alex Slater also received a promotion to vice president and assistant general manager, filling the role left open by Gomes’ promotion.

Slater previously was the team’s director of baseball operations (2017-2021), which came after working as their assistant director of scouting (2015-2017) and senior manager of pro scouting (2014-2015).

In addition, the Dodgers hired Damon Jones as vice president, assistant general manager and baseball legal counsel. Jones joined the Dodgers after spending the last two seasons as general counsel for the Washington Football Team.

Brandon McDaniel was also promoted to vice president of player performance while Thomas Albert was promoted to head athletic trainer.
