Dodgers Rally Against Wade Davis In 9th Inning To Sweep Rockies

A decision to push Alex Wood back to Sunday’s series finale didn’t pay dividends as he only managed to pitch two innings. But Los Angeles Dodgers erased their early deficit and scored three runs in the ninth inning to sweep the Colorado Rockies behind a 10-7 victory.

It marked a third consecutive game for the Dodgers with double-digit runs scored, which was a first since 1996 when it coincidentally was also completed at Coors Field. Moreover, the series sweep of the Rockies on the road was a first for the Dodgers since 2010.

Colorado jumped on Wood early, with consecutive singles by DJ LeMahieu, Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado to start the bottom of the first inning giving them a 1-0 lead. After Trevor Story’s sacrifice fly extended it, Ian Desmond’s home run put the Dodgers in a 4-0 deficit.

Wood’s struggles carried into the second inning as he walked opposing starter Chad Bettis and LeMahieu before allowing a single to Blackmon that loaded the bases. He nearly escaped the jam by striking out Arenado, only to hit Story with a pitch.

Desmond then worked a walk, bringing in a run and the Dodgers falling behind 6-1 before Wood could get out of the inning.

Having hit a solo home run in the third inning, Max Muncy pulled a three-run shot into right field in the fourth, cutting the Rockies’ lead to 6-4. Yasiel Puig’s two-out double sparked a rally in the sixth inning, as it was followed by a Kiké Hernandez walk and Logan Forsythe RBI single.

Breyvic Valera then hit a routine grounder to shortstop that Trevor Story threw low, allowing two runs to score and the Dodgers to take a 7-6 lead. Their comeback efforts were offset by Forsythe similarly making a costly error.

With two outs in the seventh and Arenado at third base, Forsythe booted a grounder, allowing Desmond to reach and the tying run to score. He began to atone for the miscue by leading off the ninth with a double.

A wild pitch left Forsythe at third base, and he later scored the go-ahead run on Justin Turner’s slow chopper that Wade Davis came off the mound to field but didn’t have a play at the plate. Yasmani Grandal then put an exclamation point on the inning by crushing a two-run home run to center field.

Kenley Jansen retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to convert his 14th save of the season.
