2025 MLB All-Star Game Starters: Will Smith Voted National League Catcher

The Los Angeles Dodgers had Will Smith voted among the 2025 MLB All-Star Game starters on the National League team. Smith earned a third consecutive career All-Star selection at catcher.

Smith receiving the nod to start was widely expected as he was ahead of the Chicago Cubs’ Carson Kelly in both All-Star voting updates. Though, vote totals did reset when Phase 2 began Monday morning for fans to pick between finalists at the respective positions.

Freddie Freeman (first base), Tommy Edman (second base), Max Muncy (third base), Mookie Betts (shortstop), Teoscar Hernández (outfield) and Andy Pages (outfield) advanced as All-Star Game finalists as well.

Shohei Ohtani earned an automatic starting spot by virtue of receiving the most votes for any NL player in Phase 1.

This marks Smith’s first time starting in the Midsummer Classic. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who is leading the NL team this year, has long advocated for Smith to receive national recognition and recently picked him over the Seattle Mariners’ Cal Raleigh as the best catcher in baseball.

“It’s great,” Roberts said of Smith’s continued success in 2025. “He’s the best catcher in baseball. I know Raleigh is having a good year. He’s going to be the starter in the All-Star Game, and he’s just a talented, young ballplayer.

“Going through the injuries and never making an excuse for it, but now he’s healthy, he’s strong. You can see it in the batter’s box and behind the plate. He’s really performing. I’ve always had the utmost confidence in Will as a ballplayer.”

Smith is the first Dodgers catcher voted an All-Star Game starter by fans since Russell Martin in 2007.

Dodgers All-Star Game history: Will Smith

Smith caught five innings and went 0-for-1 with a walk in the 2023 MLB All-Star Game. In last year’s exhibition at Globe Life Field, he had a 1-for-2 showing and played the final four defensive innings.
