2024 World Series Schedule: Yankees Waiting On Winner From Mets-Dodgers

The New York Yankees eliminated the Cleveland Guardians in extra innings on Saturday to punch their ticket for the 2024 World Series, where they will play the New York Mets or Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Yankees are back in the World Series for the first time since 2009, when they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. New York captured their 41st American League pennant by ousting the Guardians in five games.

They needed to come from behind after falling into a 2-0 deficit. The Yankees’ rally started on Giancarlo Stanton’s game-tying two-run home run in the sixth inning.

The home run was Stanton’s 16th in 36 career postseason games. Moreover, all eight of Stanton’s hits against the Guardians during playoff games is a home run.

Juan Soto hit what held as a game-winning three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning.

In all best-of-seven postseason series, teams that take a 3-1 now have gone on to win on 80 of 94 occasions (85.1%), including 38 of 46 such instances in a League Championship Series.

The Dodgers are looking to add onto that success rate despite losing Game 5 at Citi Field.

If the Yankees renew a World Series rivalry with the Dodgers, they would do so without home-field advantage. The Dodgers finished with the best record in baseball and thus secured homefield throughout the entire postseason.

In that scenario, the World Series would be played at Yankee Stadium for Games 3 and 4, and a potential Game 5.

The Dodgers and Yankees have played 11 times in the World Series, but not since 1981. New York won the first five head-to-head meetings in the Fall Classic before the Dodgers broke through in 1955. L.A. also won in 1963 and their most recent matchup in 1981.

The Yankees would have home-field advantage over the Mets. The only time the Mets and Yankees played a Subway Series for the World Series was in 2000. The Yankees won their third consecutive championship that year and 26th World Series overall.

If the Mets and Yankees play in the World Series for a second time in MLB postseason history, Games 1 and 2 would be played at Yankee Stadium, in addition to possible Games 6 and 7.

Regardless of the scenario, Joe Davis and John Smoltz are going to call all Fall Classic games exclusively for Fox. Star times have not yet been announced.
