2023 Los Angeles Dodgers Player Reviews: Jake Reed

Jake Reed returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in November 2022, when he was claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

The right-hander had originally joined the Dodgers during the 2021 season, but then went on to join the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Mets as well. Reed was back with the Dodgers in 2022, only to finish that season with the Baltimore Orioles before joining the Red Sox in the offseason.

The 2023 season differed for Reed in that it was his first time spending a full year as part of the Dodgers. Though, that only came after getting designated for assignment in January in order to make room for the signing of J.D. Martinez.

Reed cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was on their Opening Day roster but joined the Dodgers in April as the corresponding move to Michael Grove landing on the 15-day injured list because of a right groin strain.

Reed was DFA’d one day later and accepted a Minor League assignment to return to OKC after clearing waivers.

The 31-year-old remained with Oklahoma City for the rest of the 2023 season, and finished 3-1 with a 7.34 ERA and 1.75 WHIP over 29 games. Reed allowed six runs and retired just two batters faced in his lone appearance for the Dodgers.

Jake Reed 2023 highlight

During an up-and-down season with Oklahoma City, Reed enjoyed his finest stretch from September 1-15, as he 6.2 scoreless innings over five consecutive appearances.

2024 outlook

Reed, who has pitched at the Major League level over parts of three seasons, became a Minor League free agent. It’s plausible he receives an MLB opportunity from some team but may be more likely to sign another Minor League contract, potentially with the Dodgers.
