Since making his MLB debut in 2019, Tony Gonsolin has established himself as a key contributor in the Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation.

After impressing in his first three big league campaigns over a relatively small sample size, the right-hander received his first extended opportunity last season.

Gonsolin made it a priority to go deeper into games and immediately found success. He became the first National League pitcher to reach eight wins and gave up two runs or fewer in 16 consecutive starts to begin the year.

Gonsolin was selected to his first All-Star Game, which he relished. “It feels good,” he said at the time. “I feel like I’ve been throwing pretty well this year, so it’s nice to have it come around full circle.”

Gonsolin finished the first half with a perfect 11-0 record, 2.02 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 93.2 innings pitched over 17 starts. The 28-year-old wasn’t quite as effective over the final two-and-a-half months of the regular season but still put up excellent numbers.

Gonsolin went 5-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 36.2 innings of work during the second half (seven starts). That was despite enduring a rough stretch in July and missing five weeks due to a right forearm strain.

Gonsolin finished 16-1 with a 2.14 ERA, 3.28 FIP, 0.88 WHIP and 4.6 WAR in a career-high 130.1 innings pitched (24 starts). He allowed one run on four hits in his only appearance against the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series.

Last year’s performance help Gonsolin earn a bonus in incentives as part of the pre-arbitration pool program that was introduced in the collective bargaining agreement.

Tony Gonsolin 2022 highlight

Gonsolin enjoyed his best performance of the 2022 season on July 1, when he logged a career-high 7.2 innings and yielded only one run on four hits while collecting eight strikeouts against the Padres.

2023 outlook

Gonsolin is among the Dodgers’ players eligible for salary arbitration this offseason after qualifying for Super Two status. MLB Trade Rumors projects him to earn $3.5 million in 2023.

Gonsolin won’t become a free agent until after the 2026 season and is expected to continue being a big part of the Dodgers starting rotation going forward.
