2021 Los Angeles Dodgers Player Reviews: Shane Greene

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ need for pitching depth led to the signing of veteran reliever Shane Greene on Aug. 20 after he was designated for assignment and subsequently released by the Atlanta Braves upon clearing waivers.

Despite successful campaigns in 2019 and 2020, Greene remained a free agent until re-signing with Atlanta on a one-year deal this past May. He reported to Triple-A Gwinnett to build up arm strength before joining the Braves’ active roster in June.

Greene went on to appear in 19 games with Atlanta but struggled to the tune of an 8.47 ERA, 6.77 FIP and 1.82 WHIP. Those represented career worsts for the 33-year-old, but he nevertheless was excited for the opportunity to help the Dodgers repeat as World Series champions.

“This clubhouse has got a lot of big names in it, but very humble players. I feel like part of the family right away,” Greene said at the time. “It’s been really easy really fast. I’m looking forward to trying to win a World Series.”

Greene enjoyed somewhat of a bounce back with L.A. as he posted a 4.05 ERA, 6.62 FIP and 1.20 WHIP in 6.2 innings pitched (nine appearances).

However, he continued to be plagued by a high walk rate and was designated for assignment on Sept. 22 as the corresponding move to AJ Pollock being reinstated from the 10-day injured list.

Greene was released four days later and did not pitch again in 2021. In 28 games between the Braves and Dodgers, he went 0-1 with a 7.23 ERA, 6.72 FIP and 1.65 WHIP across 23.2 innings pitched.

Greene’s 2021 highlight

After allowing two runs in his Dodgers debut against the New York Mets, Greene went on a stretch of seven consecutive scoreless appearances from Aug. 25-Sept. 7.

2022 outlook

Greene remains a free agent and presumably will sign a contract closer to the start of Spring Training. Even with his struggles this year, he may be able to secure a Major League deal due to his track record that includes an All-Star selection as recently as 2019.
