The Los Angeles Dodgers saw several players reach free agency the morning after winning their first World Series since 1988. It was a group that included Kiké Hernandez, Joc Pederson and Justin Turner, among others.
L.A. of course re-signed Turner to a multi-year contract, while Hernandez and Pederson went on to sign with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, respectively. Playing time was a factor in their decision to leave as they sought bigger roles.
Hernandez and Pederson were popular not just among the fanbase, but inside the Dodgers clubhouse as well. They both played key roles in helping the club end the championship drought and will now look to make the most of their new situation.
With Opening Day approaching, Turner acknowledged the Dodgers will miss Hernandez and Pederson this season, while also noting their departures could open the door for other players to make an impact, as seen on SportsNet LA:
“Obviously those are two big guys in our clubhouse. Been a part of this organization for a long time, so we’re definitely going to miss those guys but wish them all the best. You don’t really replace those guys, and you don’t ask anyone to come in and try to replace Kiké or Joc. You just make sure guys are aware there’s opportunities for other guys to come in, step up and help us win games on a daily basis.”
Hernandez played all over the diamond during his time with the Dodgers, but his departure frees up extra playing time for the likes of Gavin Lux and Chris Taylor at second base.
Meanwhile, Pederson’s void in left field can be filled by Taylor, AJ Pollock and Matt Beaty. The latter earned one of the final spots on the Dodgers’ Opening Day bench and may also see some time at right field and first base this season.
Dustin May named 5th starter, Zach McKinstry earns spot on Dodgers’ Opening Day roster
As the Dodgers put the finishing touches on their Opening Day roster, it was recently revealed that Dustin May has earned the final spot in the starting rotation. Zach McKinstry also claimed the final spot on the bench.
McKinstry is in the same versatile mold of Hernandez, just batting left-handed.
