The Los Angeles Dodgers used a combination of four pitchers in their 8-2 win against the L.A. Angels on Sunday, beginning with Walker Buehler, who allowed just one run over six innings en route to his 12th win of the season.
The right-hander didn’t have his best stuff but was able to limit the damage by working out of multiple jams. He threw 95 pitches and was followed by Phil Bickford out of the bullpen, who tossed a scoreless seventh inning.
The final six outs were recorded by pitchers making their Dodgers debuts. Kevin Quackenbush, on a Major League mound for the first time since 2018, struggled as he yielded three hits and one run while managing to retire only batter.
He was replaced by Justin Bruihl, who had just been called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City hours before first pitch. The 24-year-old rookie got the job done as he escaped the frame without further damage before going on to throw a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Bruihl was the 32nd pitcher used by the Dodgers this season, which set a new franchise record, breaking the previous mark of 31 shared by the 2015, 2016 and 2018 clubs.
L.A. presumably will add to that record as this season progresses. The club acquired Danny Duffy at the MLB trade deadline, and he is expected to return from the injured list in the middle of September.
The Dodgers also recently signed Cole Hamels, who is in the process of building up arm strength. He threw a simulated game at Dodger Stadium over the weekend and could enter the rotation in the coming weeks.
Dodgers sign Nick Tropeano to Minor League contract
Even after adding the likes of Duffy, Hamels and Max Scherzer in recent weeks, the Dodgers remain on the lookout for pitching depth.
The club reportedly signed veteran right-hander Nick Tropeano to a Minor League contract, after he has spent time with the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets this season.
Tropeano went 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in four relief appearances for San Francisco prior to being designated for assignment back in June for Scott Kazmir to be added back from the restricted list.
New York then claimed Tropeano off waivers and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse. He was recalled four separate times by the Mets, but only appeared in one game.
Tropeano was designated for assignment on July 30 and elected free agency after clearing waivers.
