Significant turnover on the Los Angeles Dodgers roster created an opportunity for multiple rookies this season, although James Outman didn’t initially appear to factor into the team’s 2023 plans.

Minor League signee Jason Heyward was named an Opening Day roster favorite early into Spring Training, and the Dodgers also added David Peralta during the offseason. However, Outman put together a strong showing and kept himself part of the conversation.

Granted, Gavin Lux’s ACL and LCL tear freeing up a roster spot likely worked in Outman’s favor. Now cemented in the Dodgers outfield, the 25-year-old has gotten off to an incredible start.

Following a second multi-homer game in the past three days, Outman said his focus is on contributing by any means and he’s benefitted by learning from Dodgers teammates, via SportsNet LA

“It’s been great. I’m just trying to play good baseball and help the team win. I think guys are starting to come around. Muncy has been awesome, learning a lot from the guys, clubhouse has been awesome. They’ve been teaching me a lot.”

Outman elaborated that he has focused on watching how Dodgers veterans take at-bats and prepare, which he then attempts to incorporate:

“Just observing their at-bats, how they go about everything and stuff like that. Try to emulate that. … I think the biggest thing is how everyone carries themselves. They’re very professional, very respectful and stuff like that. I think we can all learn from great people, and I’ve been around great guys.”

Outman’s hot start to the season has him leading the early race for National League Rookie of the Year. Among all NL rookies, he ranks first in batting average (.311), on-base percentage (.400), slugging percentage (.703), on-base plus slugging (1.103), hits (23), triples (three), home runs (seven) and RBI (19).

That’s come while initially being relegated to a platoon role and playing strong defense at all three outfield positions.

James Outman breaks Dodgers rookie record

Outman’s seven home runs set a Dodgers rookie record for most all-time hit during the months of March and April.
